"On a leisurely stroll through Santa Fe, New Mexico, I stumbled upon this wonderful floral display and couldn’t resist capturing it on film – pre-digital camera days."

Kayak Beach

“We were at Hilton Head in the late afternoon on a not very sunny day even though the sign said ‘Awesome Sunsets’. But it was a nice picture since not many people were taking the kayaks out.”

Leaf Veins

“I was taking pictures on our deck of this pretty yellow leaf. I turned over the leaf next to it and noticed how beautiful the veins were on the back side and it turned out to be the most beautiful of the two.”

HM
Charles Leamon
Night Blooming Cereus

“The buds of the Epiphyllum typically open near midnight and close with the first rays of dawn. After taking it with my little 5 mp Nikon P & S camera, I applied a PhotoShop plug-in (fractalius) to achieve this wonderful effect. This particular plant has been in my family for over 40 years and is affectionately called ‘Ruth’ by my mother.”

Last Appearance

“Near Screw Auger Falls in Maine, my eye caught a beautiful fallen birch log. I was intrigued by the stark white of the bark with the random black patterns. I picked up the red maple leaf, placed it on the log and took the picture. It was one my favorites from the trip.”

HM
Bob Lawrence
Kingsport Carnival 1970

“Carnivals are a rich photographic environment, with lots of color and motion. As is my custom, I didn’t plan the shot. It was one of many I took while walking around. The original was copied to digital, edited with PhotoShop, and had a filter applied along with selective color.”

Don’t Fence Me In

“I had spent most of the day taking pictures of landscapes, plants and buildings. When I saw the horse standing next to the fence, I couldn’t resist taking a shot or two.”

Emma

“I took the picture of my daughter during a beach trip and loved the way her hair was blowing. Since I love making photos a little out of the ordinary, I hoped the cropping and Black and White effect along with the way her hair was flowing would catch the eye.”

2nd Place
Bill Lancaster
Appalachian Root Trail

“It was taken on the AT in the Mt. Rogers Wilderness area. My girlfriend was walking down the trail when I noticed the shot and asked her to step behind the last big tree on the left. I always tell her that she’s in the photo and now it’s a prize winner.”

Blacktail Plateau

"It was taken in Yellowstone NP during the ’Golden Hour’ just before sunset. In the multi-colored marshes, the winding stream and over-all evening glow, I saw a landscape just begging to be photographed.”

HM
Cindy Williams
Foggy Trail

"It was raining off and on all morning last fall in Hensley Settlement near Cumberland Gap with a heavy fog moving in. We spend the whole time with our umbrellas up, trying to hold the camera in the dry and still get a decent picture.”

HM
Cindy Williams
Fog on the Mountain

"When I look at this picture with the fog so thick, it almost seems to beckon me to come closer to see what treasures are hidden by the fog.”

HM
Cindy Williams
The Red Chair

"I had driven by this house several times and every time I would say, ‘I need to bring my camera the next time and take a picture of that chair on the porch. I finally stopped two weeks ago and got my picture.”

HM
Ruth Baker
Expecting

"During the first day of a photography workshop at Magnolia Plantation near Charleston, SC, I spotted them building the nest in the rookery at the end of the trail. On the morning of the third day, I got the perfect picture of their efforts.”

HM
Clair Hixon
Watchman of the Night

“It was taken in Zion NP near sunset. No special technique, just the perfect autumn timing for good color.”

Veined Leaf

“I actually can’t remember where I photographed this one, but I do remember that I made several shoots of the same leaf – most were totally useless. My advice is, just keep shooting.”

“This is a picture of my granddaughter playing on the beach last year in Daytona. At first she was afraid of the water, but after the first two or three days, we couldn’t keep her out of it.”

Three Sinks, No Waiting

“As part of the Scott Kelby World Wide Photo Walk, our group was walking down the main street in Abingdon, VA when I saw discarded windows, a tub, chairs, and sinks in a back alley across the street. I thought the sinks had real character. The window balanced it out for one of my first urban photos.”
